Low-frequency electroacupuncture suppresses carrageenan-induced paw inflammation in mice via sympathetic post-ganglionic neurons, while high-frequency EA suppression is mediated by the sympathoadrenal medullary axis.
This study is pretty old now! I came across it while researching for a writing project. It’s astonishing how much we actually do know about how acupuncture works for pain and inflammation reduction. Brain Res Bull. 2008 Mar 28;75(5):698-705. doi: 10.1016/j.brainresbull.2007.11.015. Epub 2007 Dec 26. Nice study showing that not only did the group receiving acupuncture do better on a quality of life scale post surgery, but that their stress markers and inflammatory markers were lower. It was a simple protocol, also. 30 min St36, Spl6, LI 11 give 30 min before epidural and then post op. Am J Chin…

Believe it or not, this might be relevant to the current covid crisis since patients are having a “cytokine storm”. Possibly electro acupuncture would help. It won’t happen, but maybe in the future. Just as in this article that shows that “flow” is actually enhanced by increased sympathetic activity, anti-obesity effect is also improved by increased sympathetic activity. In my research, I seem to be disappointed when the treatment doesn’t lead to increased parasympathetic activity. But maybe I should be paying more attention to what treatments lead to…

In this letter the authors make the case that tragus stimulation may be as effective as cymba concha. This would be helpful since the tragus is so much easier to use a clip on. Filing here for info. Though the tragus may not have the same density of fibers, they may be easier to reach,…
