My ongoing work to use HRV (heart rate variability) to document improved autonomic activity (stress levels) has as one of its foci the use of TAVNS and if there appears to be improved stress levels with its use.
Even though there are studies showing that TAVNS activated autonomic centers in the brain, I have not been able to show that effect in HRV in every patient. This post shows the opposite effect in a patient who receives acupuncture for cosmetic purposes.
The treatment dates when she had TAVNS in addition to her acupuncture are shown with circles. As you can see, the stress levels are definitively higher than in treatments without the TAVNS. This is why I’m still hesitant to recommend this to every patient. I think there are still unanswered questions about who will benefit.
