Electro-acupuncture-induced neuroprotection is associated with activation of the IGF-1/PI3K/Akt pathway following adjacent dorsal root ganglionectomies in rats

This paper shows that acupuncture triggers IGF-1, a gene linked with longevity.  Here it is involved in neuroplasticity following dorsal root ganglionectomies.  Difficult to know if we can extrapolate to longevity genes in humans. Int J Mol Med. 2019 Feb; 43(2): 807–820. Published online 2018 Dec 18. doi: 10.3892/ijmm.2018.4035 PMCID: PMC6317683 PMID: 30569108 Electro-acupuncture-induced neuroprotection is…

The Use of Natural Agents to Counteract Telomere Shortening: Effects of a Multi-Component Extract of Astragalus mongholicus Bunge and Danazol

Increased telomerase can lead to increased telomere length and improved life span.  In this study they looked at the effect on telomerase with astragalus, an Ancient Chinese Medicine herbal remedy for longevity and danazol, a testosterone booster.  The Astragalus had a more pronounced effect on telomerase than the danazol. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7168059/ Biomedicines. 2020 Feb; 8(2): 31….

I wonder about this quite a bit, whether people’s habits get more routine with age. …

Warm Needle Acupuncture Shows Anti-Aging Effects in Animals

This study looks at moxibustion, warm needle moxibustion in elderly rats to see effect on their gonads.  It appears that there is an anti-aging effect in the testes which originates in the pituitary.  Since the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal)  axis is key in stress response, this, of course interests me. Also because of acupuncture’s claims in leading…

Life in the Fast Lane Kills: Mitochondria and Longevity

A fascinating interview, and not too technical, by an expert who studies longevity.  Please read the whole thing, but these two excerpts below bring up some interesting concepts that might be counter-intuitive.  The first is that anti-oxidants if taken as a supplement can actually lead to more free radicals.  The second is that fruits and…
