A study of 33,560 adults found that those taking 8000 steps or fewer per day had a lower risk for mortality if their steps were accumulated in bouts of 15 minutes or longer. At a follow-up of 9.5 years, mortality decreased from 4.36% to 0.80% with longer bouts of walking. Cardiovascular disease incidence also declined with longer bouts. The study highlights the importance of longer walking durations for reducing mortality, especially in sedentary individuals. The research was funded by the National Heart Foundation and the National Health and Medical Research Council.
