Cardiovascular Depressor Response: Longhurst Brain Study

Blog has been quiet since I was overseas after attending and presenting at the SAR conference in Ann Arbor.  It was a pretty good conference.  No big breakthroughs yet, unfortunately, but incremental progress with brain mapping.  An interesting forum discussion on electroacupuncture versus manual acupuncture.  The upshot was that we don’t have enough evidence yet. …

Physiological changes associated with de qi during electroacupuncture

This study looks at “de qi,” the classic needling sensation sought in traditional chinese medicine.  In this study, stimulation at 11IG and 4IG lead to an increase in LF/HF ratio or a decrease in HRV, and increase in stress levels.  This is interesting since LI11 stimulation is part of the protocol for high blood…

Acupuncture for Gastric and Cardiac Autonomic Function

This study contradicts other studies which have found that stimulation of both ST36 and PC6 enhance vagal activity.  Happy to see these kinds of studies nonetheless.  It’s interesting that Bladder 32 would have an effect on the GI tract since, traditionally, one doesn’t use that point for that.  Also that CV12 increases vagal hrv (presumably…

SF Acupuncture Clinic to Open at Chinese Hospital

A few patients asked me to comment on this article.  It doesn’t say anything of note except to discuss the new clinic in, ahem, CHINATOWN.  But the article uses the same mealymouthed wording that I’m getting sick of “experts disagree” etc…  But in spite of my quibbles, I’m extremely pleased that acupuncture is becoming more…
