Steps to Lower Your Risk of Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is rising among young adults, even those with healthy lifestyles. While some factors are beyond control, experts suggest several actionable steps to reduce risk:

1. Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle

  • Diet: Limit ultra-processed foods, processed meats, and sugary beverages. Adopt a Mediterranean diet. Instead, focus on high-fiber foods like beans, lentils, and whole grains. Consider reducing your use of plastic for food storage and microwaving, opting for glass or ceramic instead.
  • Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity, which supports gut health and lowers cancer risk.
  • Avoid Smoking and Excessive Alcohol: Both are linked to increased cancer risk.
  • Pay attention to your light exposure, decreasing nighttime light and increasing daytime light.

2. Recognize and Act on Early Symptoms

Early detection is crucial for effective treatment. Watch for these warning signs and consult a doctor if they persist:

  • Unusual diarrhea lasting weeks
  • Persistent abdominal pain
  • Bloody stool (red, magenta, or black)
  • Iron deficiency anemia (detected through a blood test)

3. Prioritize Gut Health

  • Antibiotic Use: Limit unnecessary antibiotics, as they disrupt the gut microbiome. Choose antibiotic-free meat when possible.
  • Circadian Rhythm: Maintain a regular sleep schedule and reduce exposure to artificial light, as circadian rhythm disruptions may harm gut bacteria.

4. Understand Environmental Exposures

Microplastics, pollutants, and even parental exposures may contribute to risk. While broader policy changes are necessary, reduce personal exposure where possible, like minimizing the use of plastic products.

5. Stay Informed About Screenings

The CDC now recommends routine colon cancer screenings starting at age 45. If you have a family history or persistent symptoms, request a fecal immunochemical test (FIT), which is non-invasive and affordable.

By focusing on lifestyle adjustments, early detection, and environmental awareness, you can take proactive steps to safeguard your health.
